The Green Key

The Green Key is an international eco-label awarded to hotels, hospitality venues, restaurants and conference centers by the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education). Since its launch, in 1994, more than 4,400 establishments in more than 60 countries worldwide have been awarded the Green Key.

The Green Key is a testament that a business meets the highest standards in environmental management and sustainable operation. The program encourages businesses to adopt a long-term environmental policy, reduce their carbon footprints, and foster behavioral change among guests and staff. Certification is granted for one year and must be renewed annualy.

The EcoOcean Association is the exclusive representative of the Green Key Program in Israel.

Eligibility for Certification

To earn the Green Key Certification, a business must meet strict criteria across multiple fields. Some criteria are mandatory, while others are optional. Businesses must meet a required percentage of the optional criteria, depending on its seniority in the program.

Business Certification Process

Step 1 – Application: The business must submit the required forms and supporting documents.

Step 2 – On-Site Inspection: EcoOcean sends an inspector to conduct the inspection at the business' premises. During the inspection, documents are reviewed and a visual assessment is performed to verify that the business meets the terms of the program.

Step 3 – Decision: EcoOcean informs the business whether it has met the terms of the program and provides an inspection report.

Step 4 – Awarding the Certification: If the business qualifies, it is granted a certificate and a plaque confirming its compliance with the terms of the program. The business's certification status is updated on leading platforms, such as Booking and Google.

Step 5 – Renewal: The certification is valid for one year. Before it expires, EcoOcean sends an inspector to conduct the renewal assessment. Starting in the second year of the program, on-site inspections arae conducted once every three years, and in the remaining years, businesses must submit documentation to EcoOcean confirming their compliance with the criteria, without the need for an on-site visit by the inspector.
